President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China announced in the last few days that “those who play with fire will perish by it” as a warning to USA President Joe Biden for his interference in Taiwan.

What does President Xi Jinping want from President Joe Biden?

President Xi Jinping demanded that President Biden commit to the One China principle when it comes to Taiwan. Biden on the other hand communicated that the USA strongly opposes any unilateral movements from China against Taiwan and that the situation will not be stable.

What’s the back story?

China’s rconflict with Taiwan is pretty similar to Russia’s conflict with Ukraine and as you know recently a war erupted in Eastern Europe because of the tense relationship between the two.

China considers Taiwan to be part of its territory and not a separate country and has no problem exerting force to have Taiwan as part of its borders.

What is the One China policy?

It refers to the United States’ ambiguous diplomatic position regarding Taiwan but conversely the US does sell weapons to Taiwan for self-defense against China which of course does not sit well with China.

Taiwan is a democratic self ruling country and the USA always tries to strengthen its military relationship with Taiwan. On the other hand the USA and China are rivals.

USA provokes China

The reason behind the recent rise in tension is U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit to Taiwan. This represents an obvious change in US’ stance towards Taiwan. What made China angry were Nancy Pelosi’s statements that the USA is backing Taiwan and that their relationship will be stronger than ever.

China issued an official statement in response to Pelosi’s visit stating that those who play with fire will perish by it and that China will not just stand by and let the US play with World Peace

China’s recent military operations:

Pictures of recent military drills on Xiamen city beach in Fujian province circulated on social media documenting the presence of many tanks and heavy artillery in the city streets at the same time as Pelosi’s visit. Many videos circulated on social media as well detailing drills taking place in Xiamen city which is located on the opposite coast of Taiwan.
